How much does food contribute to our Ecological Footprint?

Food is a major Ecological Footprint driver. This year, Global Footprint Network collaborated with the Barilla Center for Food and Nutrition to create an infographic that showcases food-based solutions to lower the Ecological Footprint. Cutting food waste in half worldwide could move the date of Overshoot Day 11 days; eating less protein-intensive food worldwide could move Overshoot Day 31 days.

Wondering how you can help #MoveTheDate of Earth Overshoot Day towards one-planet living?

You’re in the right place. Since we launched the Earth Overshoot Day campaign in 2006, we’ve been calculating the date of Earth Overshoot Day each year for every year, going back to the early 1970s when the world first fell in ecological deficit. Over time, we’ve expanded this campaign to include Steps to #MoveTheDate so that anyone may feel empowered to take action in their own life. Because if we #MoveTheDate five days out every year, we’d be under one planet before 2050. More than ever we understand that #MoveTheDate can’t stop at Earth Overshoot Day and must live throughout the year. The movement keeps growing. There’s no time to lose. We need you. We depend on you. Please consider supporting our work for as little as $5. One hundred dollars helps us generate 2 million media impressions during Earth Overshoot Day. Thank you!
