Electric vehicles come in all shapes and sizes. Driven by Tesla, who has truly shifted the market, all major car brands have started to enter the field of electric vehicles. Because of the heavy batteries required by larger vehicles, many of the most innovative designs being proposed today can be found on the lightweight end of the spectrum: electric scooters, motorcycles, compact cars and vans. Minimizing the energy requirements of these vehicles makes it possible to partially recharge their batteries using integrated solar-panels. 

With the quickly evolving market, innovators continue to push the envelope. Dutch start-up Lightyear One, which was started by a team of young engineers who won four world championships in solar car races, has applied their insights into designing a car that is among the lightest and most aerodynamic vehicles ever conceived. Combined with a PV surface, the car has a daily range up to 70km on solar alone, according to Lightyear One.
