What is the solution?

The Alliance for Carbon Neutrality: Siena is a framework that supports policymakers in implementing their measures to reduce greenhouse gas emission “hotspots”, in addition to evaluating and monitoring their effectiveness. The Alliance also encourages business and citizens to act more sustainably.

This solution improves our resource security in the cities category.

How does it #MoveTheDate?

The Province of Siena has been a Carbon Neutral Territory since 2011, reducing its carbon Footprint for a decade.

How is it scalable?

Other cities can implement the Province of Siena’s framework to become carbon neutral. Additionally, a city can work to maximize the sustainable use of its internal renewable resources (i.e., forest management, geothermal heat, renewable energy, etc.) and engage residents to adopt lower impact lifestyles.

Data indicate the Province of Siena’s Ecological Footprint and biocapacity were nearly in balance in 2005. Now, the province’s carbon Footprint is lower than it was in 2005 thanks to its efforts and policies to reduce GHG emissions. Carbon neutrality was first achieved in 2011, the first year that GHG emissions were completely compensated by the forest’s uptake of CO2. The Alliance for Carbon Neutrality: Siena believes that if every actor (policymakers, citizens, and entrepreneurs) takes even a small step, the outcome will be significant.

The Alliance for the Carbon Neutrality: Siena has been promoted by the Monte dei Paschi di Siena Foundation, University of Siena, Siena Municipality, Tuscany Region, and Province of Siena.

The Alliance includes more than 20 members in enterprises, institutions, NGOs, and is rapidly growing. Learn more about them here.
