#MoveTheDate

21
Days

Existing off-the-shelf, commercial technologies for buildings, industrial processes, and electricity production could move Overshoot Day at least 21 days, without any loss in productivity or comfort, according to an analysis by researchers from Global Footprint Network and Schneider Electric.

What is the solution?

Egyptian Electricity Holding Company, Egypt’s national utility provider, is creating the Middle East’s first-ever country-wide smart grid so as to meet the needs of the country’s growing population as well as its industrial development.

This solution improves our resource security in the cities and energy categories.

How does it #MoveTheDate?

The new smart grid will help Egypt meet its future energy demands while advancing the country’s sustainability strategy. Egypt’s government is looking to significantly increase energy output from renewable sources, to 20% of total supply by 2022, and 42% by 2035.

How is it scalable?

Energy demand from emerging economies will keep rising: the grid of the future will have to be green, sustainable and digital.

Over one-third of global CO2 emissions are related to the power grid. As part of Egypt’s Vision 2030 plan, the government has pledged to fully meet the energy needs of the whole country, to promote economic growth and national competitiveness. The national utility provider selected Schneider Electric to convert the country’s national electric distribution network into a future-ready smart grid. The agreement, signed in 2021, includes the establishment of four control centers that will monitor and optimize the electricity network, as well as over 12,000 smart ring main units that will be installed throughout the national network. The Grids of the Future support the growth of DERs, microgrids, energy communities, and other flexible resources across digitally planned, designed and operated lifecycles. Schneider Electric grid solutions are already being implemented at the world’s top 10 biggest utilities.

There’s no benefit in waiting!

Acting now puts you at a strategic advantage in a world increasingly defined by ecological overshoot. Countless solutions exist that #MoveTheDate. They’re creative, economically viable, and ready to deploy at scale. With them, we can make ourselves more resilient and #MoveTheDate of Earth Overshoot Day. If we move the date 6 days each year, humanity can be out of overshoot before 2050.
