#MoveTheDate

21
Days

Existing off-the-shelf, commercial technologies for buildings, industrial processes, and electricity production could move Overshoot Day at least 21 days, without any loss in productivity or comfort, according to an analysis by researchers from Global Footprint Network and Schneider Electric.

What is the solution?

Swedish data center EcoDataCenter, in Falun, uses Schneider Electric’s EcoStruxure solutions to achieve high energy efficiency and recycle heat waste.

This solution improves our resource security in the energy category.

How does it #MoveTheDate?

99% energy efficiency helps make EcoDataCenter in Falun, Sweden, the world’s very first (and only, so far) climate-positive data center.

How is it scalable?

Schneider Electric’s data center solutions are pre-fabricated, deploy quickly and offer predictable performance from day one. They are already powering 50% of data centers around the world, including the top 4 hyper-scale cloud providers.

Focused on sustainability, EcoDataCenter wanted to set up an ultra-efficient, reliable power management system to support their climate-positive data center project and ensure customer-server uptime. The company also sought greater physical security and cybersecurity for data safety and communications between clients.

EcoDataCenter’s uses Schneider Electric’s EcoStruxure for Cloud & Service Providers as its partner. Within EcoStruxure architecture, four Galaxy VX UPSs at 1250kW each support customer load with the possibility to run at 99% efficiency with ECOnversion mode. This backup power frees up energy that can be diverted to clients.

EcoStruxure proves to be crucial also in helping recycle the facility’s heat waste: through an integration with the city’s thermal power plant, surplus heat is utilized and used for heating and production of renewable biofuels, which reduces total CO₂ emissions in and around Falun. The excess heat represents a savings of about 700 – 800 hours per year in fossil fuel operations, which is more than the total CO₂ emissions that EcoDataCenter generates in a year.

The data center site is supplied by 100% renewable electricity – hydropower and wind power from northern Sweden. The buildings are wooden structures. Connected sensors and meter data generate analytic reports on the data center’s operational efficiency — and its sustainability index.

There’s no benefit in waiting!

Acting now puts you at a strategic advantage in a world increasingly defined by ecological overshoot. Countless solutions exist that #MoveTheDate. They’re creative, economically viable, and ready to deploy at scale. With them, we can make ourselves more resilient and #MoveTheDate of Earth Overshoot Day. If we move the date 6 days each year, humanity can be out of overshoot before 2050.
